 During my years in human resources, I closed four companies. It was tough, and I was good at it. It gave me skills and understanding of how people work and function, especially in the worst circumstances.

 

 Throughout these times of major transition, I worked with the management team to develop and implement programs that ended up retaining between 85% - 95% of all the staff members. Not just top management – you need the heart of the company to keep the daily functions alive. And, not just with financial incentives. Financial incentives only get you so far when people are faced with the knowledge that they will not be receiving a weekly paycheck soon.

 

 We were able to retain employees during a time when they knew, without a doubt, that they would be losing their jobs. They did not immediately jump ship and take the first job they were offered. They stayed. And, they actually had fun during the process!

 

 It was done by following one of my core values: Treat everyone with dignity and respect. Treat every person just how you would like to be treated in this circumstance.

 

 We built a foundation of TRUST in the company.

 

 And, this foundation did not start being built until the company knew it was closing.

 

 Just think if these companies would have done it before – from the beginning. Would they have closed their doors?
